Beard Transplant Aftercare: Washing, Shaving, Redness and the First Weeks

How to wash your face after a beard transplant, when to shave and when redness and scabs fade: a care guide from the first days to the first months.

Beard Transplant Aftercare: Washing, Shaving, Redness and the First Weeks

Care in the first two weeks strongly affects beard transplant results. The face moves constantly with eating and talking, so some special points apply. Your clinic's written instructions come first.

Period What happens What to do
Day 1 Redness, mild swelling, small blood spots Keep dry, don't touch
Days 2–3 Scabs form, swelling possible First wash as instructed
Days 4–7 Scabs visible, itching Gentle daily washing, no scratching
Days 7–10 Most scabs fall Don't pick them
Days 10–14 Redness fades First shave when allowed

Washing

First wash usually on day 2–3; use lukewarm water and the recommended mild product; lather in your palm and dab without rubbing; rinse with cupped hands rather than the shower spray; pat dry gently.

Shaving General advice
First shave Usually after 10–14 days when allowed
Tool Electric trimmer or scissors first; razors later
Foam and lotions Avoid fragranced or alcohol products early
Native beard Trim carefully around the area

Transplanted hairs may shed (shock loss); this is normal.

Food and daily life: avoid very hot, spicy and acidic foods early, clean around the mouth gently after eating, use a straw for moustache work, and sleep on your back.

Redness and scabs: redness usually fades in 1–2 weeks (longer in fair skin); scabs fall on days 7–10; avoid make-up or concealer until permitted.

Avoid General period Why
Smoking At least 1–2 weeks, ideally permanently Impairs healing
Alcohol First days Swelling and bleeding
Intense sport 1–2 weeks Infection, graft damage
Sun and sunbeds First weeks Redness, discolouration
Pools, sea, sauna Usually at least 1 month Infection, heat
Facial massage and treatments Until permitted Graft damage

Contact the clinic for increasing pain, redness and swelling, yellow-green discharge or smell, fever or persistent bleeding.

Later: shock loss at weeks 2–8, new growth at months 3–4 (sometimes with folliculitis), fullness by month 6 and the final result at month 12.

At our Istanbul clinic, clients receive written aftercare with first wash and check-ups planned; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share progress photos.
