Blood Tests at Home: Fasting Times and Preparation Rules
How many hours should you fast before a blood test, can you drink water and should you take your medicines? A preparation guide for accurate home blood test results.
Contents
Blood tests are among the most common tools for diagnosis and follow-up. For older, bedridden or less mobile people, getting to a lab on an empty stomach is hard. With home blood collection, a healthcare professional comes at the scheduled time, draws blood into the correct tubes and transports it to the laboratory under proper conditions. Preparation matters just as much as the draw itself.
| Test | Fasting | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fasting glucose | 8–12 hours | Water allowed |
| Lipid profile | Usually 9–12 hours | Some labs accept non-fasting; doctor decides |
| Insulin, HOMA-IR | 8–12 hours | Morning sample |
| Complete blood count | Not needed | Any time |
| Thyroid tests | Usually not needed | Timing matters if on thyroid medicine |
| HbA1c | Not needed | Shows 2–3 month average |
| Kidney and liver tests | Often 8 hours advised | Follow lab advice |
Fasting longer than 12 hours can also affect some results.
While fasting
Plain water is allowed and helps veins. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, chewing gum and smoking, and skip strenuous exercise the day before.
Medicines
Your doctor decides. Blood pressure and heart medicines are usually continued; thyroid hormone is often taken after the sample; diabetes medicines and insulin need adjustment to avoid hypoglycaemia; tell the staff if you take blood thinners.
The home process
- Share the test request when booking.
- Staff arrive early in the morning for fasting tests.
- Identity and request are checked; tubes are labelled.
- A suitable vein is chosen, cleaned and sampled.
- Samples are transported at the right temperature.
- Results are sent to you or your doctor.
Tips for difficult veins: drink water, keep the room warm, wrap the arm in a warm towel, let the arm hang down for a few minutes.
Afterwards: press for 3–5 minutes without rubbing (longer on blood thinners), and eat soon after fasting tests, especially with diabetes.
