CPAP for Sleep Apnoea: How It Works and How to Make Adjustment Easier

What a CPAP machine is and how it helps sleep apnoea: common difficulties in the first weeks, tips for getting used to it, pressure settings and daily use.

CPAP for Sleep Apnoea: How It Works and How to Make Adjustment Easier

Obstructive sleep apnoea means the upper airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, so breathing stops or becomes shallow. Loud snoring, breathing pauses, frequent waking, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness are typical. Untreated, it can raise the risk of hypertension, arrhythmias, stroke, poor diabetes control and road accidents. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) is one of the most effective treatments for moderate and severe sleep apnoea.

How it works

CPAP delivers steady, gentle air pressure through a mask, acting like an "air splint" that stops the soft tissues of the throat collapsing, so the airway stays open and pauses and snoring decrease.

Type Feature
Fixed CPAP One pressure set from the sleep study
Auto CPAP (APAP) Adjusts pressure within a range through the night
BPAP (BiPAP) Two pressures for breathing in and out; used in certain cases

The right device and pressure are set by a sleep study and the doctor.

Benefits: less snoring and fewer pauses, more refreshing sleep, less daytime sleepiness, better focus and mood, easier blood pressure control in some, and better sleep for partners.

Difficulty Practical tip
Mask feels uncomfortable Wear it for short periods while reading or watching TV
Pressure feels too strong Use the ramp feature to start low and rise slowly
Dry mouth or nose Use or increase the heated humidifier
Mask leaks Check size and fit; do not over-tighten straps
Claustrophobia Try smaller masks (nasal pillows), relaxation exercises
Removing the mask at night Keep the device close; use reminders

To benefit, CPAP should be used every night for most of sleep, usually aiming for at least 4 hours on most nights; longer use brings more benefit.

Daily routine

Fill the humidifier with distilled water, fit the mask without leaks or excessive tightness, start the machine (ramp if wanted), empty and air-dry the chamber in the morning, and wipe the mask cushion daily.

Part Care
Mask cushion Daily with warm water and mild soap
Frame and headgear Weekly wash
Tubing Weekly wash, hang to dry
Humidifier chamber Empty daily, wash weekly
Filter Replace as recommended
Mask and tubing Replace periodically

See your doctor if sleepiness, snoring or headaches persist despite regular use, after weight changes, or if you cannot get used to the mask.

We rent and sell CPAP and auto CPAP devices across Yalova with mask fitting, installation and training, following up the first weeks by phone and home visits, and deliver to Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze.
