Caring for a bedridden person is made up of many small tasks repeated through the day. Done regularly and correctly, they keep the patient comfortable and prevent pressure sores, infections and stiff joints.

Time Care step
07:00–08:00 Mouth care, face and hands, pad check, repositioning
08:00–09:00 Breakfast with head raised 30–45°, morning medicines
10:00–11:00 Bed bath (every other day or as needed), skin check
12:00–13:00 Lunch, fluids, repositioning
14:00–16:00 Passive exercises, conversation, rest
18:00–19:00 Dinner, evening medicines
21:00–22:00 Mouth care, pad change, night position

Repositioning continues at night, roughly every 2–3 hours.

Bed bath

  1. Keep the room at 24–26 °C and ensure privacy.
  2. Use two basins: soapy and rinsing water.
  3. Wash from clean to less clean: face, neck, arms, chest, abdomen, legs, back and genitals last.
  4. Dry each area immediately and keep the patient covered.
  5. Dry skin folds carefully and check for redness or wounds.
  6. Moisturise dry areas, but not between the toes.

Why mouth care matters

Bacteria in the mouth raise the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Clean teeth, gums and tongue at least twice a day; turn the head to the side if the patient is not alert; remove and clean dentures nightly; moisturise lips.

Changing sheets with the patient in bed

  1. Turn the patient to one side and roll the old sheet towards them.
  2. Lay half of the clean sheet and roll the rest beside the old one.
  3. Turn the patient over the rolls to the other side.
  4. Remove the old sheet, pull the clean one tight and leave no wrinkles.

Pads and skin protection

Change wet pads promptly, clean front to back and use barrier cream.

Protect your back: bend your knees, not your waist, and raise the bed to waist height when possible.
