FUE or DHI for Beard Transplants? Choosing the Technique, Angle Control and Density
Which technique is preferred for beard transplants? Comparing fine-channel FUE with direct DHI implantation, angle control and healing differences.
Beard transplants need much lower angles and finer hairs than scalp work, so technique directly affects naturalness. Both FUE (channels then placement) and DHI (direct pen implantation) can be used.
| Feature | Effect on technique |
|---|---|
| Very low exit angle | Channels almost parallel to the skin |
| Direction varies by area | Cheeks, chin, neck and moustache differ |
| Single hairs | Almost all single grafts |
| Facial skin | Rich blood supply; usually quick healing |
FUE: very fine channels first, then placement; relatively fast for large areas such as a full beard; planned angles; very fine tips (sapphire or fine steel) for low-angle channels.
DHI: grafts loaded in pens and placed while the channel is made; graft-by-graft angle control; less risk to existing hairs when densifying; precision in delicate areas like the moustache and lip corners.
| Criterion | FUE | DHI |
|---|---|---|
| Full beard | Advantageous | Possible; longer |
| Densification | Possible with care | Advantageous |
| Moustache and delicate areas | Possible | Advantageous |
| Angle control | During channel opening | Every graft |
| Healing | Usually quick | Usually quick |
Combined: often FUE for the cheeks and DHI for the moustache and lip corners, chosen by the doctor based on design, existing hair and graft count.
Naturalness depends most on design, a low natural angle, single grafts, density gradients and the team's beard-specific experience, not the technique's name.
At our Istanbul clinic, FUE and DHI are used separately or together according to beard structure and design; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can discuss the best technique at consultation.
