Oxygen itself does not burn, but it strongly supports combustion. In an oxygen-rich environment, a small spark can become a fast-spreading fire. Many burns and fires among home oxygen users involve smoking and open flames. Simple rules remove most of this risk.

Rule Explanation
No smoking at all Neither the patient nor others, including e-cigarettes
Keep away from flames At least 2–3 metres from stoves, fireplaces, heaters, candles and matches
Avoid oily products No petroleum jelly or oil-based creams on the face; use water-based products
Electrical devices Use hair dryers and electric blankets with caution while oxygen flows
Ventilation Do not place the device in cupboards or behind curtains
Warning sign "Oxygen in use, no smoking" at the entrance
Fire extinguisher Accessible extinguisher and smoke detector

Smoking with a cannula in place can cause severe facial and airway burns.

Placement

At least 30 cm from walls and furniture with good airflow; away from radiators, heaters and direct sunlight; plugged directly into an earthed socket rather than extension leads; tubing arranged to avoid kinks and trips.

Humidifier use

If used: fill with distilled or boiled and cooled water, keep between the marked lines, empty and wash daily and refill fresh, and disinfect weekly as instructed. Whether it is needed at low flows depends on medical and device advice.

Part General care
External foam filter Wash weekly and dry completely
Nasal cannula Usually every 2–4 weeks or when soiled
Mask Replace regularly per manufacturer
Extension tubing When worn, stiff or dirty
Internal filters and servicing Periodically per manufacturer

Follow your model's manual.

Skin and nose care

Use soft ear protectors against cannula pressure, water-based moisturisers for a dry nose and check the area daily.

See a doctor for worsening breathlessness despite oxygen, blue lips or fingertips, excessive drowsiness, headache or confusion (possible CO2 retention), or alarms you cannot resolve.

We provide safety and maintenance training at installation across Yalova, with periodic checks and consumables (cannulas, masks, filters), and delivery and training in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use petroleum jelly for a dry nose?
