How Many Sessions Does Scalp Micropigmentation Take? Intervals and What Each Session Does
How many SMP sessions are usually needed, how long to wait between them and the purpose of each session: process timeline and how results settle.
SMP is not a one-session procedure. Pigment is built in layers for a natural 3D look, so the process usually spans several sessions, each with its own purpose.
| Session | Purpose | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Base layer: hairline and general dot distribution | Start |
| 2 | More density, filling gaps, tone layer | Usually 1–3 weeks later |
| 3 | Fine-tuning, shading, detail | If needed, 1–3 weeks after session 2 |
| Touch-up | Refreshing faded pigment | Over the years |
Numbers vary with area, skin type, pigment retention and target density.
Why several sessions?
Layering mimics natural depth; some pigment lightens during healing; controlled progression avoids an overly dark look; and skin response is assessed after each session.
| Area | Approximate time |
|---|---|
| Small (scar, donor camouflage) | 1–2 hours |
| Thinning zones | 2–3 hours |
| Full scalp (shaved look) | 3–5 hours |
Between sessions
Mild redness may occur briefly; dots look darker at first and soften and settle; some fade during healing and are completed next time; follow aftercare instructions.
Final tone settles within a few weeks after the last session; protect from sun and avoid harsh products. Pigment may fade over time with sun, skin renewal and products; many people refresh every few years.
At our Istanbul clinic, SMP follows a personalised session plan with tone and density reviewed together; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can schedule sessions around travel.
