Hypertension is called the "silent killer" because it usually causes no symptoms. Uncontrolled, it raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and vision loss. Good management relies on regular home monitoring, not just one-off clinic readings.

Why home readings matter

White-coat effect (high only at the clinic), masked hypertension (normal at the clinic, high in daily life), seeing how medicines work through the day and helping the doctor adjust doses accurately.

Step Practice
Device Validated upper-arm digital monitor with correct cuff size
Timing Morning (before medicines and breakfast) and evening
Duration At least 7 days before a check-up
Repeats Two readings 1–2 minutes apart
Record Date, time and both values; averages go to the doctor

Rest seated for 5 minutes, avoid caffeine and smoking for 30 minutes, sit with back supported and feet flat.

Targets

For many adults, home averages below 135/85 mmHg are aimed for, but targets are personalised by age, other conditions and tolerance. In frail older people, lowering too far can cause dizziness and falls.

Medicine adherence

Do not stop medicines when readings are normal; normal values often reflect the medicine working. Take them at the same time daily, ask your doctor what to do about missed doses, discuss side effects rather than stopping, and remember that NSAID painkillers and some cold remedies can raise blood pressure.

Lifestyle

Less salt (under 5 g a day), weight loss, 150 minutes of brisk walking weekly, more vegetables and fruit (if no kidney disease), no smoking, limited alcohol, and treating sleep apnoea.

Very high readings with severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, visual disturbance, slurred speech or limb weakness need 112. Without symptoms, rest, re-measure and contact your doctor; do not increase doses yourself.

During home visits the doctor reviews your log, checks your device, reviews medicines and plans kidney tests, potassium and ECG if needed.

We support hypertension follow-up with home doctor visits, nurse monitoring and home tests across Yalova, with appointments in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze.
