Sudden Hair Shedding After Stress, Illness or Surgery (Telogen Effluvium): Why It Happens and How Long It Lasts

What telogen effluvium is after stress, fever, surgery, rapid weight loss or childbirth, how long it lasts and how mesotherapy may support recovery.

Sudden Hair Shedding After Stress, Illness or Surgery (Telogen Effluvium): Why It Happens and How Long It Lasts

Months after a difficult period, hair may come out in handfuls: telogen effluvium, where stress pushes many follicles into rest at once, shedding months later.

Trigger Examples
Physical stress Surgery, serious accident, high fever
Infections Febrile viral illness
Hormonal change Childbirth, stopping the pill
Nutrition Rapid weight loss, strict diets, low protein
Deficiencies Iron, vitamin D, B12
Psychological stress Grief, job loss, intense anxiety
Medicines Some medicines (medical assessment)
Thyroid Hypo- or hyperthyroidism

Why the delay? The resting phase lasts about 2–4 months, so shedding begins 2–3 months after the trigger, making the link hard to see.

Stage General duration
Onset 2–3 months after the event
Heavy shedding Usually 2–4 months
Recovery 6–12 months after the trigger resolves
Chronic form Can exceed 6 months

Follicles usually aren't permanently damaged; hair often returns.

Telogen effluvium Genetic loss
Sudden Gradual
Diffuse Patterned (crown, front, part)
Normal shaft thickness Progressive thinning
Usually temporary Progressive
Often a clear trigger Family tendency

Both can coexist; TE can unmask genetic loss.

Supporting recovery: find the cause (blood count, ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D, B12); correct deficiencies on medical advice; adequate protein and calories, no crash diets; manage stress and sleep, with psychological support if needed; gentle hair care.

Mesotherapy may support recovery, but isn't enough alone without treating the cause.

See a doctor if shedding lasts over 6 months, gaps appear, there are symptoms like fatigue, palpitations, weight change or irregular periods, or the scalp itches, reddens or scales.

At our Istanbul clinic we take a detailed history, look for triggers and support recovery with mesotherapy where appropriate; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share recent illnesses, surgery or life changes.
