Ultrasound and Doppler at Home: Suspected Leg Clots and Other Uses
What can home ultrasound and colour Doppler examine? Signs of deep vein thrombosis, abdominal and kidney ultrasound, preparation and reporting.
Ultrasound uses sound waves to image organs and vessels; it is radiation-free and painless. Some examinations can be done at home with portable devices. Colour Doppler shows blood flow and is key when a leg clot is suspected.
What is deep vein thrombosis (DVT)?
A clot in the deep veins of the leg. Risk rises with immobility, surgery, bed rest and some chronic conditions. If part of it travels to the lungs, a life-threatening pulmonary embolism can occur.
Signs: one-sided leg or calf swelling, calf pain and tenderness, redness or warmth, prominent surface veins.
Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood or fainting may indicate pulmonary embolism: call 112.
| Examination | Assesses | Common reason |
|---|---|---|
| Venous Doppler (legs) | Leg veins | Suspected DVT |
| Arterial Doppler | Leg arteries | Poor circulation, non-healing wounds |
| Abdominal ultrasound | Liver, gallbladder, kidneys | Abdominal pain, abnormal tests |
| Kidney–bladder ultrasound | Kidneys, bladder | Urinary problems, retention |
| Soft tissue ultrasound | Lumps under the skin | Abscess, fluid |
Preparation
Abdominal ultrasound usually needs 6–8 hours of fasting; bladder scans may need a full bladder; Doppler needs no special preparation.
The exam takes 15–30 minutes with gel and a probe, and findings are reported to the physician.
Lowering DVT risk at home
Take prescribed blood thinners without gaps, do ankle movements and passive exercises, wear compression stockings if advised and drink enough fluids.
We organise home ultrasound and Doppler on medical request across Yalova, with appointments in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze.
