A Guide for Patients with a Holter Monitor: What to Watch During 24–48 Hours

What is the difference between rhythm and blood pressure Holter monitoring? Bathing, sleep, daily activity and keeping a symptom diary while wearing a Holter.

A Guide for Patients with a Holter Monitor: What to Watch During 24–48 Hours

Some heart symptoms come and go: dizziness on getting up, palpitations in the evening, a racing heart that wakes you at night. A standard ECG may miss them. A Holter monitor records heart rhythm or blood pressure continuously for 24–48 hours (sometimes longer) while you go about your day.

Feature Rhythm (ECG) Holter Blood pressure Holter (ABPM)
Records Every heartbeat Blood pressure at intervals
Connection Chest electrodes Arm cuff
Duration Usually 24–48 hours Usually 24 hours
Used for Palpitations, fainting, suspected arrhythmia White-coat hypertension, treatment effect, night-time BP
Felt? No Squeezing when the cuff inflates

Wearing a rhythm Holter

Do: continue your normal routine; write symptoms with times in the diary; press the event button if there is one; note walks, stairs, medicines and sleep.

Avoid: getting the device wet (postpone showers), pulling electrodes, electric blankets, MRI and strong magnetic fields.

Wearing a blood pressure Holter

  1. Keep your arm still and relaxed when the cuff inflates; sit or stand still.
  2. Stop talking and walking until the reading ends.
  3. Make sure the cuff does not slip.
  4. Night readings continue during sleep.
  5. Note activities and medicine times.
Time Activity Symptom
08:15 Got out of bed Mild dizziness
11:40 Climbed stairs None
16:20 Sitting 2–3 minutes of palpitations

The diary lets the doctor match data with your symptoms. After removal, a cardiologist analyses heart rates, rhythm disturbances, pauses or day–night blood pressure averages.

We fit and collect Holter monitors at home across Yalova, with appointments in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze, so patients avoid two hospital trips.
