Choosing the Right Tone for Scalp Micropigmentation: Hair Colour, Skin Tone and Natural Results
How SMP pigment tone is chosen: approaches for black, brown, blond and white hair, the effect of skin tone and the risks of overly dark tones.
Tone selection is one of the most critical decisions for natural SMP. Too dark creates an artificial "painted head"; too light may not create enough density. The right tone considers hair colour, skin tone and the target look.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Existing hair colour | Must match side and back hair cut short |
| Skin tone | Dark dots stand out on fair skin; matching differs on darker skin |
| Hair length | Shaved versus longer hair may need different tones |
| Greying | Lighter tones for grey or white hair |
| Area | Scar camouflage and full-scalp work differ |
| Hair colour | General approach |
|---|---|
| Black and dark brown | Matched but diluted, avoiding pure black |
| Light brown | Medium tones with lighter layers |
| Blond and red | More challenging; low contrast needs very soft tones and special assessment |
| Grey and white | Light grey tones matched to existing hair |
For blond and red hair, the density effect may be more limited; set expectations accordingly.
Why not pure black?
Short follicles seen through the skin look soft grey-brown, not black; very dark pigment can look obvious and artificial after healing; and even faded pigment can leave unnatural contrast if it started too dark.
Layered tones
Usually several tones rather than one: a light base for overall density, a mid-tone for depth and texture, and darker accents at the hairline and selected areas for natural variety.
Pigment lightens during healing and over the years, so starting lighter and building up gradually is safest; touch-ups can update tone as hair greys.
At our Istanbul clinic, hair colour and skin tone are assessed in daylight, starting light and adjusting across sessions; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share daylight photos.
