Is Scalp Micropigmentation Permanent? Fading, Colour Change and Touch-Ups
How long SMP lasts, why it fades, whether colour changes and how often touch-ups are needed: factors affecting longevity and long-term protection.
A common question: "How permanent is SMP?" It is long-lasting but not unchanging; pigment may lighten over time and need touch-ups, due to natural skin renewal and external factors.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Sunlight | UV lightens pigment over time |
| Skin renewal | Removes some pigment |
| Skin type | Oily skin may fade faster |
| Immune system | Clears some pigment particles |
| Products | Harsh peels and acids speed fading |
| Aggressive shaving | Stresses the skin surface |
Colour change
With proper pigment and depth, SMP usually fades lighter without marked tone change. Too-deep placement can cause spreading or a bluish–greenish tone, and unsuitable pigments can change colour, so correct pigments and technique are critical.
| Situation | General touch-up need |
|---|---|
| Sun-protected, dry–normal skin | Every few years |
| Frequent sun or oily skin | More often |
| Over scars | Pigment may fade faster |
A touch-up is usually a single, shorter session.
Making it last
Protect from sun, use gentle products, moisturise, follow early aftercare fully and touch up early when fading starts.
Greying hair: tones can be updated with lighter shades at touch-ups to match remaining hair.
Removal: unwanted or poor SMP can be lightened or removed with laser and similar methods, though it may take several sessions, so getting the first application right is crucial.
At our Istanbul clinic, SMP uses scalp-appropriate pigments at the correct depth, with longevity advice and touch-ups when needed; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can decide touch-up timing via photos.
