Hospital Companion: Duties, Limits and Choosing the Right Person
What to consider when hiring a professional companion for a hospitalised relative: duties, communication with the care team and shift planning.
When a relative is admitted to hospital, family life changes overnight. Between work, children, home and hospital nights, relatives tire quickly. For older, confused or less mobile patients, having someone present continuously is important for safety and comfort. A professional hospital companion offers reliable support.
Duties
A companion supports daily needs and eases communication with the care team:
- Helping with eating and drinking
- Toileting, pad changes and hygiene
- Repositioning and walking with the patient
- Watching for fall risk
- Reporting changes immediately to the nurse (pain, restlessness, breathlessness, a finished IV)
- Companionship and reassurance
- Updating the family regularly
What a companion does not do
All treatment decisions belong to the care team. A companion does not give medicines, adjust IV rates or devices, give food or drink against medical advice (for example before surgery or with swallowing problems), touch catheters or drains, or interpret medical information.
| Situation | Suggestion |
|---|---|
| Short stay, independent patient | A family member may be enough |
| Long stay | Family and professional companion alternating |
| Dementia, delirium or high fall risk | Continuous experienced companion |
| Relatives working or far away | Professional companion |
| Night shifts exhausting the family | Night companion |
Choosing well
Ask about experience with similar patients, look for calm communication, hygiene awareness and reliability (references), and plan shifts for 24-hour care.
Hospitals have their own rules about the number of companions, visiting hours and companion cards; ask the ward nurse and follow procedures when changing companions.
Good companion services keep the family informed daily, while medical information comes from the doctor.
We arrange day, night or 24-hour shift companions in hospitals across Yalova, and can organise companions in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze, with a smooth transition to home care after discharge.
