Physiotherapy at Home: Who Is It For and What Happens in a Session?

Which conditions benefit from home physiotherapy and rehabilitation, how sessions are planned and why the home setting helps: a guide for Yalova and nearby areas.

Physiotherapy at Home: Who Is It For and What Happens in a Session?

Many people picture physiotherapy as machine-based sessions in a clinic, but for many patients the real goal is regaining getting out of bed, walking to the toilet, climbing stairs. The most natural place to practise is home. Home physiotherapy means a physiotherapist visits and delivers a personalised rehabilitation programme.

Patient group Goals
After stroke Balance, walking, arm and hand function, less spasticity
After hip/knee replacement or fracture Range of motion, strength, independent walking
Parkinson's and neurological conditions Balance, gait, fewer freezing episodes, fall prevention
Bedridden patients Preventing stiffness and pressure sores, sitting, transfers
Frail older people Strength, balance, fall prevention
COPD and lung disease Breathing exercises, exercise capacity
Back and neck pain Pain management, posture, strengthening
After long ICU stays Rebuilding strength

A session

  1. Assessment of pain, range of motion, strength, balance, gait and daily skills.
  2. Goal setting with the patient and family ("walk to the kitchen with a walker in two weeks").
  3. Exercise: passive, assisted, active and resistance; stretching and balance.
  4. Functional training: rolling, sitting, standing, transfers, walking, stairs.
  5. Supportive methods: heat or cold, portable electrotherapy, taping.
  6. Home programme for between sessions.

Why home?

Practice in the real environment, no travel fatigue, on-the-spot advice on home adaptations and aids, family learning correct techniques and lower infection risk.

Frequency depends on condition: early stroke or post-operative rehabilitation may need 3–5 sessions a week; chronic phases 2–3 plus home exercises. Sessions usually last 45–60 minutes. Success also depends on home exercises between sessions.

Clear space, wear comfortable clothes and non-slip shoes, and have medical reports ready.

Our physiotherapists deliver home programmes across Yalova, with plans for patients in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze after assessment.
