Scalp Micropigmentation vs Tattoos: Needles, Pigment, Depth and Appearance

Is SMP a tattoo? Comparing needles, pigment type, depth, dot technique and final appearance between SMP and traditional tattoos.

Scalp Micropigmentation vs Tattoos: Needles, Pigment, Depth and Appearance

SMP is often called a "hair tattoo" because it places pigment in the skin, but it differs markedly in technique, materials and purpose. Knowing this helps choose the right practitioner and set realistic expectations.

Feature SMP Traditional tattoo
Aim Natural follicle look Designs, text or images
Needles Very fine special tips Groupings by design
Depth More superficial Usually deeper
Technique Individual micro-dots (pointillism) Lines, fill and shading
Pigment Scalp-suitable, aimed not to change colour Wide range of coloured inks
Appearance Short follicles or density Defined visible design
Longevity Long-lasting; may lighten and need touch-ups Long-lasting; may blur
Practitioner SMP specialist Tattoo artist

Why depth matters

Too deep and dots may spread, merging into a dark shadow that emphasises baldness, and may turn bluish; too shallow and pigment fades quickly. Correct depth governs both natural look and longevity.

Dot technique

Each dot mimics a follicle: slightly varied sizes, random, irregular distribution (orderly rows look fake) and layers in different tones for depth.

SMP requires hairline design experience, follicle-mimicking dot technique, correct pigment and depth, and knowledge of scalp health and hair loss, so choose an experienced SMP specialist.

Problem Cause
Spreading dots Excess depth
Bluish tone Unsuitable pigment or depth
Artificial hairline Poor design, too sharp
Helmet look Overly dense and dark
Rapid fading Insufficient depth

Corrections can take time, sometimes with laser lightening.

At our Istanbul clinic, SMP uses scalp-suitable pigments, correct depth and natural dot technique with personalised hairline design; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can learn more at consultation.

Frequently asked questions
