Seasonal Hair Shedding: Why More Hair Falls in Autumn and When to Consider Mesotherapy
Why shedding rises in autumn and spring, telling normal from abnormal shedding, daily hair loss numbers and the role of mesotherapy.
Many people notice more hair in their brush and shower in autumn — seasonal shedding, usually temporary. But not every increase is seasonal.
| Possible factor | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Synchronised hair cycle | Follicles entering rest in summer shed in autumn |
| Sun and UV | Summer scalp exposure |
| Heat and humidity | Scalp balance shifts |
| Sea, pool, salt, chlorine | Shaft damage |
| Diet and routine | Holiday habit changes |
Research suggests the proportion of resting hairs rises towards late summer, appearing as autumn shedding.
Normal: about 50–100 hairs a day; more on wash days; long hair looks like more.
| Seasonal | Needs assessment |
|---|---|
| Usually 6–12 weeks | Longer than 3 months |
| No clear density loss | Widening part, visible scalp |
| Even shedding | Concentrated areas |
| No other symptoms | Fatigue, weight change, irregular periods |
| Similar time yearly | First time and severe |
If prolonged or with symptoms, check for iron deficiency, thyroid disease, vitamin D deficiency or hormonal causes.
Mesotherapy can support follicles directly, contribute to recovery and support shaft quality and shine.
Seasonal shedding usually resolves alone; mesotherapy is an option, not a necessity.
| Timing | Aim |
|---|---|
| Late summer–early autumn | Prepare |
| When shedding starts | Support recovery |
| If it recurs yearly | Pre-planned short course |
At home: detangle gently with a wide-tooth comb; less heat; balanced diet with protein, iron, zinc and B vitamins; hats in summer; rinse after sea and pool; sleep and stress management.
At our Istanbul clinic we assess whether shedding is seasonal or has another cause, planning mesotherapy when appropriate; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can tell us when it started and how long it has lasted.
