Skin Care for Older Adults: Dealing with Dryness, Itching and Incontinence Dermatitis
Why is older skin so sensitive? Daily care tips and product choices to prevent dryness, itching, incontinence rash and skin tears.
With age, skin becomes thinner, produces less oil and moisture and renews more slowly. Older skin is therefore prone to dryness, itching, irritation and tearing from minor knocks. Gentle daily care improves comfort and reduces infection and wound risk.
Dry skin and itching
Causes include hot, long baths, harsh soaps, dry indoor air, low fluid intake and some medicines.
- Use lukewarm water and keep baths short.
- Choose fragrance-free, pH-balanced cleansers.
- Pat dry, never rub.
- Apply moisturiser within minutes, while skin is slightly damp.
- Use a humidifier if the air is very dry.
- Keep nails short to avoid scratch wounds.
Incontinence dermatitis
| Stage | Appearance | Care |
|---|---|---|
| Mild | Pink redness | Frequent pad changes, barrier cream |
| Moderate | Clear redness, tenderness | Air exposure, zinc-based cream |
| Severe | Open areas, weeping | Nurse assessment, check for fungal infection |
To prevent it: change wet pads promptly, clean with a pH-balanced foam or warm water, dry fully, apply a thin layer of barrier cream, allow short periods of air exposure and use well-fitting absorbent pads. Small red satellite spots at the edges may indicate a fungal infection needing treatment.
Preventing skin tears
Never pull by the arms; use a slide sheet; prefer silicone tapes; pad furniture corners; dress in soft long sleeves.
Skin folds
Clean and dry thoroughly under the breasts, armpits, abdominal folds and groin every day.
