What Is a Beard Transplant and Who Is It For? Process and Expectations

How a beard transplant works for patchy or absent beards: suitable candidates, donor area, the procedure day, recovery and when results appear.

What Is a Beard Transplant and Who Is It For? Process and Expectations

For many men a beard shapes facial expression and style, but genetics, hormones, scars or some conditions can leave it patchy or absent. A beard transplant moves follicles from the scalp (usually the back of the head) to the beard area to solve this permanently.

Suitable for: genetically sparse or patchy beards, gaps on the cheeks, under the chin or in the sideburns, areas without hair due to scars, burns or surgery, men wanting a fuller, defined beard line, and moustache or goatee gaps.

Not a priority when Explanation
Very young Beard growth may continue into the mid-20s
Active alopecia areata in the beard Transplanted hair may be affected
Insufficient donor Very limited scalp donor
Uncontrolled chronic disease Safety assessment needed

The process

  1. Consultation and design suited to face shape and style.
  2. Donor preparation: a small area at the back is shaved.
  3. Local anaesthesia.
  4. Extraction of mainly single and double grafts; singles matter because beard hairs grow individually.
  5. Implantation at the natural low angle and direction of beard hair, using DHI or fine-channel techniques.
  6. Dressing and instructions.
Area Approximate grafts*
Moustache 300–600
Goatee 400–800
Cheeks (both) 800–1,500
Sideburns (both) 200–500
Full beard 2,000–4,000

Scalp follicles largely keep scalp characteristics: transplanted hair may be slightly softer, is permanent and can be shaved and styled, blending naturally over time.

At our Istanbul clinic, beard transplants are designed to suit face shape and natural angles; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share facial photos for a preliminary assessment.
