What Is a Graft and How Many Do You Need? Approximate Graft Table by Stage
The difference between grafts and hairs, average graft needs by Norwood stage, factors affecting graft count and how many grafts can be taken in one session.
The term graft dominates hair transplant research, and graft count is often seen as the measure of success. In good planning, however, graft quality, placement density and distribution matter as much as the number.
What is a graft?
A graft is a natural follicular unit taken from the skin, containing one or more hairs; hair grows in groups of usually 1–4 hairs.
| Graft type | Hairs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 1 | Hairline, eyebrows, soft transitions |
| Double | 2 | Just behind the hairline |
| Triple / quadruple | 3–4 | Mid-scalp and crown, density areas |
On average a graft holds about 2–2.5 hairs, so 3,000 grafts may mean roughly 6,000–7,500 hairs, depending on the person.
These ranges are a general guide; the real need is set at examination.
| Norwood stage | Approximate grafts |
|---|---|
| Norwood 2 | 800 – 1,500 |
| Norwood 3 | 1,500 – 2,500 |
| Norwood 3 Vertex | 2,000 – 3,000 |
| Norwood 4 | 2,500 – 3,500 |
| Norwood 5 | 3,000 – 4,500 |
| Norwood 6 | 4,000 – 5,000+ (often two sessions or priority areas) |
| Norwood 7 | Depends on donor; usually front-focused |
Factors
- Size of the bald area in square centimetres.
- Target density: denser at the hairline, relatively less at the crown.
- Existing hair: densifying thinning areas without harming native hair.
- Donor capacity: the upper safe limit.
- Hair characteristics: thick, wavy or curly hair looks fuller with fewer grafts.
- Future planning: keeping donor reserve for later loss.
Grafts per session
It depends on donor density and width. Overharvesting leaves a thin, "moth-eaten" donor, so numbers must never outrank donor health; large needs may be split into two sessions.
Is more always better?
No. Preserving graft viability with fast implantation, natural angles at the hairline, correct graft placement and balanced donor use matter more than the count.
At our Istanbul clinic, graft needs are determined individually through measurement and donor analysis. Clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can send photos for a preliminary assessment, with the final plan made in person.
