Why Do Eyebrows Thin or Fall Out? Over-Plucking, Thyroid, Alopecia Areata and Other Causes
Why eyebrows become sparse: over-plucking, thyroid disease, alopecia areata, nutritional deficiencies, chemotherapy, trichotillomania and ageing.
Thinning or lost brows change facial expression. Before a transplant or other solution, understand the cause, as some causes are treatable and brows may return.
| Cause | Feature | Chance of regrowth |
|---|---|---|
| Over-plucking, waxing, threading | Follicles damaged over years | May return if short-term; can be permanent |
| Genetic sparseness | Naturally thin or short | Does not improve on its own |
| Ageing | Thinning at the tails | Usually permanent |
| Thyroid disease | Especially the outer third | May improve with treatment |
| Alopecia areata | Round bald patches | May improve spontaneously or with treatment |
| Nutritional deficiencies | Iron, protein, some vitamins | May improve once corrected |
| Chemotherapy | Loss during treatment | Usually returns afterwards |
| Trichotillomania | Compulsive hair pulling | Behaviour must be managed |
| Skin conditions | Seborrhoeic dermatitis, eczema | May improve with treatment |
| Scars and burns | No hair in the scar | Permanent; can be camouflaged |
Thyroid: hypothyroidism can thin the outer brows; with fatigue, feeling cold, weight gain and dry skin, thyroid tests may help.
Over-plucking: short, mild over-plucking usually recovers in months, but years of plucking, repeated pulling at the same point or waxing trauma can permanently damage follicles. If trying to regrow, avoid removing hair for 6–12 months and watch what returns before deciding on a transplant.
Alopecia areata: round, sharply defined bald patches need dermatology review; transplants are usually not advised while active.
See a doctor if loss is sudden and rapid, accompanied by loss of scalp hair, lashes or body hair, there are round patches, the skin is red, scaly or itchy, or there are general symptoms such as fatigue or weight change.
| Assessment | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Detailed history | Plucking habits, medicines, illnesses |
| Brow and skin exam | Pattern and skin problems |
| Blood tests if needed | Thyroid, ferritin, vitamins |
| Dermatology review | Alopecia areata, skin disease |
Options: treating the cause, waiting without plucking, brow pigmentation and a brow transplant for permanent loss.
At our Istanbul clinic, the cause of brow thinning is assessed in detail, with tests or dermatology review first when needed, followed by transplant or pigmentation options; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can send photos.
