With age, muscle mass and strength decline, balance worsens and joints stiffen. These changes are accelerated by inactivity and can be slowed or partly reversed with regular exercise. A balance and strength programme reduces fall risk, makes daily tasks easier and builds independence and confidence.

Before starting

Consult your doctor if you have heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure, recent surgery or serious joint problems; ideally have a physiotherapist assess you first; keep a sturdy chair, counter or wall for support; wear comfortable clothes and non-slip shoes.

Component Purpose Example
Strength Easier rising, sitting and stairs Sit-to-stand, heel raises
Balance Fewer falls Supported single-leg stand, heel-to-toe walk
Flexibility Joint mobility Calf and chest stretches
Endurance Heart and lung capacity Brisk walking, stationary bike

Sample exercises

Strength: sit-to-stand (8–12), heel raises holding the counter (10–15), side leg raises (8–10 each side), wall push-ups (8–12), seated knee extensions (10 each side).

Balance: supported single-leg stand for 10 seconds, reducing support over time; heel-to-toe walking along a wall; weight shifting side to side and front to back.

Flexibility: calf stretch against a wall (20–30 seconds), chest opener with hands behind the back (15–20 seconds), gentle neck turns and tilts.

Endurance: start with 10-minute walks and build towards about 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days, adapted to the individual.

Day Programme
Monday Strength + balance (20–30 min)
Tuesday Walk (15–30 min) + flexibility
Wednesday Strength + balance
Thursday Walk + flexibility
Friday Strength + balance
Saturday Light walk or active rest
Sunday Rest or short walk

This is a general example; a physiotherapist should tailor it.

Progression

Start with few, slow, controlled repetitions; increase repetitions first, then sets; reduce balance support to one finger, then none with someone nearby; add light weights or bands on advice.

Safety

Do not hold your breath; stop immediately for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, dizziness, palpitations or sharp joint pain; go lighter on unwell days; avoid hard exercise right after meals; drink water unless restricted; clear rugs and cables from the area.

Our physiotherapists create personalised balance and strength programmes at home for older people across Yalova, tracking progress and guiding families, with programmes in Bursa, Istanbul and Kocaeli–Gebze after assessment.
