Combining DHI and PRP: What Does PRP Add Before and After a Hair Transplant?

Should PRP be used with a hair transplant? Possible benefits before, during and after surgery, session planning and realistic expectations.

Combining DHI and PRP: What Does PRP Add Before and After a Hair Transplant?

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is plasma rich in growth factors, prepared from your own blood. It is used alone for hair loss and often combined with transplants. Does it really help alongside DHI or FUE?

Preparation

A small blood sample is taken, centrifuged in special tubes, the platelet-rich plasma is separated and applied to the scalp with fine needles or another method chosen by the doctor.

Timing Possible benefit
Before surgery Supporting existing follicles and preparing the scalp
During surgery Some clinics use it in graft storage or on the recipient area
After surgery Supporting healing and existing hair
Follow-up Helping protect untreated surrounding hair

Studies report positive results, but effects vary and PRP is not a miracle; the doctor decides based on your situation.

Sessions

Often a first session on or shortly after surgery day, then a few sessions at intervals such as monthly, followed by maintenance as needed; set individually.

May be most useful for: people with thinning but living hair around the transplant, young people with active loss, women with female-pattern loss and those wanting support during shock loss.

Situation Why
Platelet or clotting disorders Effectiveness and safety
Active infection Higher infection risk
Some blood diseases or cancer treatment Needs medical review
Blood thinners Bruising and bleeding; plan with the doctor
Pregnancy Usually postponed

Afterwards: mild tenderness and redness may occur; you may be asked not to wash your hair that day; postpone intense exercise, sauna and alcohol for a day.

PRP does not replace a transplant or create new follicles in bald areas; it supports existing follicles and healing. Best results often come from combining transplant, PRP and other protective treatments.

At our Istanbul clinic, PRP support is considered when planning a transplant, with sessions set by the specialist; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can combine follow-up sessions with check-ups.
