Hair Densification with DHI: How to Increase Density in Thinning Hair
Hair thinning but not bald? The principle of DHI densification, protecting existing hair, miniaturisation and combining with supportive treatments.
Hair loss does not always mean bald patches. Often hair first thins, and the scalp becomes visible under light or when wet. The goal then is not to cover a bald area but to add grafts between existing hairs to increase density: densification, often done with DHI.
| Cause | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Miniaturisation | Genetic predisposition and DHT thinning hair |
| Age-related thinning | Natural decline in density |
| Female-pattern loss | Diffuse thinning at the crown and parting |
| After a previous transplant | Progressing loss in untreated areas |
| Telogen effluvium | Temporary shedding from stress, illness or nutrition |
Always check for temporary causes such as iron deficiency or stress; treat those first.
Why DHI?
The implanter pen lets each graft's angle and direction match surrounding hair, reduces the risk of damaging existing follicles and allows work without shaving in suitable cases.
Protecting existing hair
An experienced team places channels parallel to existing hairs, avoids over-dense packing to protect blood supply, and respects miniaturised but living follicles. Temporary shock loss of native hair may occur, mostly recovering within months.
| Area | Note |
|---|---|
| Behind the hairline | Fuller-looking front |
| Crown | Less visible scalp |
| Parting | Especially in women |
| Temples | Stronger facial frame |
| Previous transplant | More density or fine-tuning |
Combining with supportive treatments
Much thinning comes from weakened but living hair, so densification is often planned with medical treatment on advice, PRP, mesotherapy and nutrition and lifestyle changes, strengthening both transplanted and native hair.
Realistic expectations: densification reduces scalp visibility and makes hair look fuller, but results depend on donor capacity, existing hair and the pace of loss. The aim is a natural, balanced increase.
At our Istanbul clinic, densification is planned after assessing the cause and hair structure, combined with PRP and mesotherapy if needed; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can start with a photo assessment.
