Is PRP Safe? Possible Side Effects, Rare Risks and Why Sterile Technique Matters

Possible side effects of hair PRP: pain, swelling, infection, headache, temporary shedding and rare risks, plus what ensures safe application.

Is PRP Safe? Possible Side Effects, Rare Risks and Why Sterile Technique Matters

Because PRP is made from your own blood, allergy risk is very low. As with any injection, side effects can occur, mostly mild and temporary; rare risks are greatly reduced by correct, sterile technique.

Side effect Duration Notes
Injection pain Hours–2 days Scalp tenderness
Redness Hours–1 day Settles
Mild swelling 1–3 days May descend to forehead and eyes
Pinpoint bleeding During–hours Stops with pressure
Headache Hours Doctor-advised painkiller
Tightness 1–2 days Eases
Bruise at draw site Days Harmless

Less common: a brief shedding increase in following weeks (usually temporary); dizziness or fainting during the draw, especially if fasting or needle-phobic; mild itching.

Rare risk Prevention
Infection Sterile closed system, single-use materials, skin antisepsis
Nerve sensitivity Experienced injector, correct depth
Intravascular injection Anatomical knowledge, controlled technique
Scarring Very rare; correct technique

Sterility from draw to injection

  1. Single-use sterile tubes and needles.
  2. Preparation preferably in closed systems.
  3. PRP used only for you, in the same session.
  4. Scalp cleaned with antiseptic.
  5. Performed by health professionals.

Being your own blood does not remove infection risk if sterility lapses.

Seek help promptly for: fever and chills; increasing redness, heat or discharge; worsening pain; spreading swelling around the eyes; scalp numbness.

Your part: share your full history, eat lightly and hydrate, follow aftercare, postpone if the scalp has an active problem, and ask about hygiene standards.

At our Istanbul clinic PRP is performed by health professionals with single-use materials and sterile closed systems, used only for you in the same session; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can contact us easily afterwards.
