What Is PRP for Hair? How Platelet-Rich Plasma Is Prepared and How It Works

What hair PRP is, how blood is processed, how growth factors act on follicles and which hair problems it is used for.

What Is PRP for Hair? How Platelet-Rich Plasma Is Prepared and How It Works

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is plasma from your own blood with concentrated platelets, injected into the scalp as a supportive, autologous treatment.

Platelets help clotting but also contain growth factors involved in tissue repair; the aim is to deliver them around follicles.

Growth factor (examples) Proposed role
PDGF Cell proliferation, repair
VEGF Supporting blood supply
EGF Cell renewal
IGF-1 Supporting the growth phase
TGF-β Regulating healing

Research continues; response varies between people.

Preparation

  1. Blood draw from the arm (amount depends on the system).
  2. Centrifuge separates components.
  3. Red cells settle; a platelet-rich layer forms above.
  4. It is drawn into syringes sterilely.
  5. Injected into target scalp areas with fine needles.

The whole process takes about 45–60 minutes.

Condition Role of PRP
Male pattern loss (early–moderate) Common supportive treatment
Female pattern thinning Support after medical assessment
Telogen effluvium Alongside treating the cause
After transplant Supporting healing and new hairs
Fine, dull hair Supporting quality
Completely bald areas Limited; no new follicles

Can: support existing follicles, help slow shedding, contribute to thicker, shinier hair. Cannot: grow hair where follicles are gone, permanently stop genetic loss or work in one session.

PRP is a medical procedure performed sterilely by health professionals; causes such as thyroid, iron deficiency or hormones should be assessed and treated first.

At our Istanbul clinic hair loss type and stage are assessed before PRP, plasma is prepared in sterile closed systems and a personal plan is built; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can schedule around travel.
