Possible Risks and Side Effects of Hair Transplants: Which Are Normal and Which Are Warning Signs?
Swelling, redness, itching, numbness, folliculitis and infection after a hair transplant: how long they last and when to contact your clinic.
Hair transplants are considered safe in experienced hands, but like any surgery they can bring side effects and risks. Most are mild, temporary and part of normal healing. Knowing which are normal and which are warning signs helps you manage recovery.
| Side effect | When | Usual course |
|---|---|---|
| Swelling (forehead and eyes) | Days 2–4 | Usually settles in days |
| Redness | First weeks | Longer in fair skin; usually fades in weeks |
| Scabs | Days 1–10 | Fall off with washing |
| Itching | During healing | Usually temporary; don't scratch |
| Donor tenderness | First days | Controlled with painkillers |
| Numbness | Weeks in donor and recipient | Usually resolves as nerves heal |
| Shock loss | Weeks 2–8 | Temporary |
| Pimple-like bumps (folliculitis) | As new hair emerges, often months 2–4 | Most settle; see a doctor if widespread |
| Less common | Signs | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Infection | Increasing pain, redness, warmth, yellow-green discharge, smell, fever | Contact the clinic promptly |
| Prolonged bleeding | Bleeding despite pressure | Press with clean gauze, call the clinic |
| Widespread folliculitis | Many painful inflamed bumps | Medical review and treatment |
| Cysts | Persistent small lumps | Medical review |
| Poor growth | Well below expectations at 12 months | Detailed assessment |
| Visible donor thinning | From overharvesting | Prevented in planning |
Reducing risk
Before: disclose health, medicines and allergies fully; stop smoking and alcohol in advance; do requested tests.
After: follow washing and care exactly; don't scratch or pick scabs; take prescribed medicines; avoid sport, sun, pools and sea early on; attend check-ups.
Folliculitis: pimple-like bumps as new hairs break through are usually harmless; don't squeeze them, and see a doctor if numerous and painful.
Call the clinic immediately for: fever of 38 °C or above, increasing pain, redness and swelling, foul or coloured discharge, persistent bleeding, severe eyelid swelling or vision problems, and signs of allergic reaction such as breathlessness or widespread rash (call 112 in an emergency).
At our Istanbul clinic, transplants are planned with detailed assessment, hygiene protocols and regular follow-up, with written information on side effects and warning signs and a contact line during recovery; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can send questions with photos.
