Who Is PRP for Hair Suitable For — and Who Is It Not? A Candidate Assessment Guide

Who is the ideal candidate for hair PRP? Hair loss type and stage, age, blood disorders, medicines, pregnancy and situations where PRP shouldn't be used.

Who Is PRP for Hair Suitable For — and Who Is It Not? A Candidate Assessment Guide

PRP doesn't work equally for all hair loss. Identifying good candidates and unsuitable situations supports realistic expectations and safety.

Feature Why
Early–moderate loss Follicles still present
Thinning but not bald areas PRP supports existing follicles
Hair shaft thinning Aim to support thickness
Good general health More predictable response
Realistic expectations Supportive, not miraculous
Able to attend sessions Results depend on continuity

Less benefit: advanced baldness (consider transplant), long-standing bald areas, scarring alopecias (treat underlying disease), untreated deficiencies (iron, vitamin D, thyroid).

Avoid or postpone Why
Low platelets or platelet dysfunction Core cells affected
Bleeding disorders Bleeding risk
Active infection or fever Infection risk
Scalp infection or wounds Injection site problems
Active cancer treatment Oncology assessment
Pregnancy and breastfeeding Usually postponed
Severe anaemia Medical assessment
Uncontrolled chronic disease Stabilise first

Medicines: anticoagulants and antiplatelets may affect results and bleeding — never stop them without your doctor; some specialists advise avoiding NSAIDs briefly around sessions as they affect platelet function; consider corticosteroid use.

Disclose all medicines and supplements, including fish oil, ginkgo and high-dose vitamin E.

There is no strict age limit; follicle status and general health matter more.

Assessment: history of hair loss, scalp and hair examination (trichoscopy if needed), blood tests if indicated (iron, ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D, blood count), medicines and conditions, then a personal plan.

At our Istanbul clinic loss type, stage and causes are assessed before PRP, with alternatives offered when unsuitable; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share recent blood results.
