Does PRP Hurt? Injection Techniques, Pain Reduction and What a Session Feels Like
Is hair PRP painful? Injection techniques, numbing options, factors affecting pain, tips for needle-phobic patients and what to expect in a session.
Many small scalp injections can cause some discomfort, but most people find it tolerable, and comfort can be improved.
| Factor | Effect |
|---|---|
| Area | Hairline and temples are more sensitive |
| Pain threshold | Varies widely |
| Anxiety | Increases perceived pain |
| Needle size | Finer needles hurt less |
| Injection speed | Slow, controlled is more comfortable |
| Menstrual period | Some women are more sensitive |
| Fatigue | Increases sensitivity |
Techniques
- Point-by-point (nappage / micro-injection): small amounts at intervals; most common.
- Linear: plasma left along a line as the needle advances.
- With microneedling: in some protocols.
- Device-assisted: aims to standardise depth and volume.
| Pain reduction | Notes |
|---|---|
| Cooling | Numbs the area |
| Vibration devices | Reduce needle sensation |
| Numbing cream | Limited effect on the scalp |
| Local anaesthesia / nerve block | For sensitive areas if the doctor agrees |
| Breathing, distraction | Music, talking |
| Short breaks | When needed |
Needle or blood fear: say so in advance; lie down for the blood draw; eat lightly and drink water beforehand; close your eyes; mention previous fainting.
| Stage | Sensation |
|---|---|
| Blood draw | Brief prick |
| Centrifuge | Waiting |
| Injections | Small pricks, pressure, mild burning |
| Afterwards | Tightness, mild ache |
The injection part usually takes 10–20 minutes. Tenderness may last 1–2 days; some specialists advise briefly avoiding ibuprofen and aspirin — ask your doctor.
At our Istanbul clinic we use fine needles, controlled speed and suitable comfort methods; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share concerns beforehand.
