Female Hair Loss and PRP: Postpartum Shedding, Menopause and Female Pattern Thinning

Common causes of female hair loss and the role of PRP: postpartum shedding, menopause, female pattern thinning, PCOS, iron deficiency and planning.

Female Hair Loss and PRP: Postpartum Shedding, Menopause and Female Pattern Thinning

Women usually experience diffuse thinning at the crown and part line rather than baldness, with more varied causes — so identifying the cause before PRP matters.

Cause Feature Role of PRP
Female pattern thinning Slow thinning at crown and part Supportive, on medical advice
Postpartum shedding Heavy shedding 2–4 months after birth Usually resolves; assess after breastfeeding
Menopause Thinning with hormonal change Possible support
Iron deficiency Diffuse shedding, fatigue Correct deficiency first
Thyroid disease Diffuse shedding Treat thyroid first
PCOS Androgen-related thinning With treatment of the condition
Telogen effluvium Sudden shedding after stress or illness Often resolves
Traction Thinning at hairline and temples Change habits first

Postpartum: pregnancy hormones delay shedding, so hair falls together after birth, usually from 2–4 months, resolving in 6–12 months for most. PRP is generally postponed while breastfeeding; assess if shedding exceeds 12 months; check iron and thyroid.

Menopause: falling oestrogen can thin hair; PRP may be supportive; hormone therapy decisions belong with a gynaecologist.

Assessment: history, menstrual and pregnancy history, medicines (including the pill), blood tests if indicated (blood count, ferritin, thyroid, vitamin D, B12, hormones), scalp exam and trichoscopy.

Topic Approach
Area Usually crown and part
Haircut Not needed; hair is parted
Sessions 3–4 loading + maintenance
Combination Prescribed topical or systemic treatment
Dye Wait at least 1 week after

Daily care: avoid tight styles, reduce high heat, limit chemical treatments, eat enough protein.

At our Istanbul clinic female hair loss is assessed for hormonal, nutritional and genetic causes, with PRP planned when appropriate; clients from Yalova, Bursa, Kocaeli and Gebze can share recent blood results.
